211. Knowing or Knowing About?

“I have a good friend,” Stan began one morning, “who knows a great deal about the Bible.”

Continuing, he said, “This friend can run circles around just about anyone with what she knows.”

“That’s great,” I replied.

“Not necessarily,” Stan countered.

“Why in the world do you say that?” I asked.

“Because,” Stan replied, “I am afraid my friend knows about the Bible and about God, but I don’t think she knows God.”

“Stan,” I asked, “aren’t you just splitting hairs here?”

“No,” he said. “There’s a world of difference between knowing God and knowing about Him.”

Continuing, he said, “When Jesus defined eternal life, He didn’t say it was knowing about God the Father and Jesus the Son.”

“No, Jesus said that eternal life is knowing God the Father and His Son.”

182. What’s God Done Lately?

“We had our fellowship group last night,” Stan began one morning.

“Good time?” I asked.

“It is always great,” Stan responded. “Super people!”

Continuing, he said, “There was something that occurred to me as we were finishing that I think is worth focusing on.”

“What do you have?” I asked.

“Well,” he said, “we always end our fellowship time with prayer. The leader usually asks for prayer requests and asks if anyone has a praise report.”

“What I am going to say,” Stan continued, “is for me to hear more than anyone else, but I think it is worth noting how praise is often viewed. Too often, I think, praise is limited to reporting on how God has answered a specific prayer.”

“Isn’t answered prayer worthy of praise?” I asked.

“Absolutely,” Stan responded, “but I am to be filled with praise to and for God all of the time, whether…
