82. Rebuke

Waiting for the Train

“My wife,” Stan began, “rebuked me this morning.”

“What was that all about?” I asked.

“I was reading the newspaper and said some things about the news that upset me.  My dear wife simply said, ‘I don’t think those words are appropriate for you to say.’”

“What was your response to her?”

“I thanked her for speaking the truth.  I told her she was right and I apologized.”

“But,” Stan continued, “before you start thinking I am something special, let me tell you that has not always been my reaction to being criticized, especially by my wife.”

“It took me a long time to come to the realization that God uses my wife to speak to me.  My natural tendency was to react to her correction by getting angry.  And that only made everything worse.”
